I arrived at the Crisp Point lighthouse about an hour before sunset. I had to drive many miles on unimproved dirt roads to reach this isolated spot in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The sky was clear, the weather warm, and I could not imagine a more pleasant place to spend an evening. In the minutes after sunset, the line of clouds over Lake Superior suddenly began to glow as though on fire.
