The temperature hovered just above 0° F and a strong wind pelted me with snow flurries off Lake Michigan. Even with liner gloves on, I could take my hands out of their protective shells for only moments at a time before they began to ache with cold. I'll confess to a passing sense of pride in prevailing against such harsh conditions. But I'm humbled when I reflect that this lighthouse has weathered such storms for well over a century.
