As I positioned myself across the bay from the Eagle Harbor, Michigan, lighthouse before dawn on a summer morning, not a single star shone through the heavy overcast. But I knew chances were still good that I'd get the shot I was after. From long experience I know that on the cusp of dawn, between dark and day, a cloudy sky passes through a period of rich blue.
