A statue of Father Jacques Marguette stands in the park below Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island. Father Marquette established a mission at Saint Ignace, just west of the Island, in 1671. In 1673 he joined the expedition of Louis Jolliet and became the first Europeans to explore the Mississippi river as far as the Arkansas river.
